In terms of energy saving, WEG keeps pace with the world and is committed to continuously developing new energy-saving products to provide customers with energy-saving solutions with a short payback period.

To improve the reliability and economy of cooling tower applications, WEG has developed the W22 cooling tower direct drive system. The new system eliminates the reduction mechanism in traditional cooling towers, reduces mechanical damage and improves operational flexibility, thereby improving the energy efficiency level of the system.

Direct drive system application introduction:

In large manufacturing processes that require cooling systems, water is often used as a heat conductor. The water dissipates heat into the environment through cooling towers, where large fans are used to create airflow to accelerate the heat dissipation of the "water mist".

Fans are usually driven by a combined system consisting of a motor and a reduction gear to provide the torque and speed suitable for fan operation.

In recent years, WEG has developed motors that can provide the required torque and speed without a reduction gear (gearless).

The motor uses a permanent magnet rotor and is driven by a variable frequency drive (VFD) to achieve high efficiency and high torque even at low speeds. This speed control method allows the motor to change airflow control according to process requirements and environmental changes, achieving on-demand output, saving energy and gaining economic benefits at one time. Because the reduction in application energy consumption is exponentially proportional to the fan speed, variable speed systems save significantly more energy than fixed speed systems.

Alex Sandro Barbosa Passos, engineer in the product development and application department of WEG, pointed out: "The W22 cooling tower direct drive system does not require a reduction mechanism, which not only reduces cooling water contamination caused by gear oil leakage, but also brings many advantages, such as higher controlled airflow cooling efficiency, less maintenance downtime and lower noise levels. The direct drive system also has the outstanding advantage of the safety system of VFD overcurrent protection, which can ensure that the motor is completely stopped in an emergency."

Traditional cooling tower systems can lead to major repairs due to speed reduction mechanism failure, contamination, oil leakage, mechanical misalignment and excessive vibration, but direct drive systems do not have these problems.

Advantages of cooling tower direct drive system:

● Higher energy efficiency

● No coupling/mechanical transmission chain required

● Better safety and reliability

● Lower noise

● Less maintenance requirements

● No speed reduction mechanism and drive shaft required, less mechanical loss
